We are happy, excited and thrilled to share with you Global Pride 2020, a 24-hour broadcast event that will feature inspirational, educational, and entertaining segments from hundreds of Prides, artists, world leaders, and human rights advocates. The moment COVID-19 suspended large in-person gatherings, more than 500 Pride organizers came together to design this collective digital Pride, contributing over 1,500 submissions from 110 countries in 33 languages and in all 7 continents (including Antarctica). Global Pride will take place on June 27 across several online platforms. It will show resilience and determination - a spirit that cannot be postponed or cancelled.

Beirut Pride has worked hard to bring in submissions from Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, as well as a group that works with Arab LGBTIQ+ individuals from the diaspora.

We are thrilled with the Afghani submission, with the Egyptian diaspora engagement, with Ahmed Alaa’s recollection of his arrest in 2017, followed by a tribute to Sarah Hegazi, with the great Tbilisi Pride trailer, with the Iranian video featuring Iranian LGBTIQ+ people from and in Iran, with the Kurdistan submission, with the beautiful Libyan video, with the Moroccan illustration video and rap song, with the Trans* Pakistan video, with the Palestinian superb video, with the Sudanese submission, with the Syrian fierce video. Beirut Pride submits Megaphone IDAHOT 2020 video “Sex, Gender and Society” that highlights our local LGBTIQ+ realities. In response to our challenging Lebanese times, we also submit an art film that emerges from our context and reflects on the global polarizing happenings to convey a soothing message of existence, resistance and persistence to all.

Global Pride 2020 is expected to be the largest Pride event in history, the longest and the most watched.

 

Global Pride 2020 Arabic Title Adaptation

 

We compiled 6 different Arabic versions for “Global Pride”, and asked our participants from the Arab countries to select the version they felt best about.

We also asked for the professional advice of linguists and translators, as we are aware it is not enough to be a native speaker to “create/adapt” a word or an expression, or to convey a meaning and an impact.

The majority of the respondents settled for “al-iftikhar al-3alami”, الإفتخار العالمي.

It was the title linguists and translators appreciated the most. It was also the one participants voted the most for.

Individuals and organizations voting on the selected title come from Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Sudan and Algeria.

As stated by a participant, “al-iftikhar” conveys “reverence, majesty and awe”. “Fakhr” sounds weak, haughtiness and arrogance, rather than taking pride. Entries from Arabic dictionaries seconded that.

We also add the Hijri calendar to the Arabic logo, celebrating and honoring the intersections between Islam, faith, sexual orientation and gender identity.
